how to protect online activities

With the advancement of technology, the internet has seemingly become our second home. Browsing through google or scrolling through our news feed feels like hanging around the living room of a virtual world. Because everyone is so dependent of the internet, issues on internet safety and privacy has been on the spotlight for quite some time now.

Internet Safety

Internet users, especially the younger ones, often take these issues too lightly. Oftentimes, the idea of being hacked online or being robbed of online identity is too far fetched until it happens to someone close to us or to us, ourselves.

Recently, the United States passed a law allowing internet service providers to sell your web history even without your consent.  This is quite alarming. First and foremost, your online security is at risk especially when there is no encryption going on. Even your passwords might be stored and sold. Secondly, the sale would include sensitive or personal information such as your online banking transactions and activities or even your medical information. If you thought your location and whereabouts are kept completely private, think again. Your online activities will definitely help make it easier for you to be tracked down. Apparently, there are so many companies thirsty for these information as they may use it for their advantage in such a way as they use consumer reports.

That said, it is important to set security measures that will ensure online safety.

Security Measures

One common and effective security measure to pursue is the use of virtual private networks or VPNs. Connecting to a private network will conceal your actual internet service provider address. Thus, your online activities are kept secret as well.

The benefits VPNs provide make Portuguese VPN providers well sought after; the same goes for VPN providers for other countries. However, these providers must be chosen carefully as not all of them offer reliable services. Usually, it is best to avoid completely free of charge services since these may just be too good to be true.

deleting online cookies

Another good method to increase online security is to look into the privacy settings of the websites or online platforms. Each website has their own set of privacy watchers; they are in charge of keeping the users protected in terms of privacy. Thus, if Facebook provides for a two-factor authentication measure, you should deal with it as it is for your own safety.

Browsing privately or incognito is also beneficial. Although cookies and other trackers will still follow through, the incognito option makes the plight much lighter for internet users. Speaking of trackers, you should also be wary about cookies and scripts as these store any information you encode such as your passwords; regular clearing cookies and history is advised.

Lastly, it is important to be wary in general. Do not easily trust links passed around online as these may be phishing measures set forth by online hackers. Always monitor your accounts and look out for suspicious and uncommon online activities.

VPNs have grown in popularity throughout the world not only due to the enhanced need for privacy but also for a growing need to maintain Internet neutrality and stopping bigger companies from spying on citizens throughout the world.

Internet neutrality is the last bastion of free speech and also one of the few places that people around the world can finally gather to avoid being spied on by both governments and also companies who are selling their information throughout the world.

However, these factors aren't the same all over the place. The rights of Internet users in the USA are very different from the rights of internet users in China or even in Vietnam. There is a large gap between the browsing ability of people anywhere in the world.

Government Control and ISPs

As governments realized the importance to on spying on their citizens the important of following what is happening throughout the world for these kind citizens becomes even more important. ISPs often start to work in tandem with governments who need the web data in order to effectively monitor their citizens and people.

The Role of VPNs and Freedom

VPNS allow anyone to access the internet while maintaining privacy and not getting spied on by any 3rd parties. They are essential to a quality browsing experience that is safe from infiltration. Countries throughout the world are opting for VPNS and providing security measures that are either state sanctioned or in many cases are deemed to be highly illegal. This opens up the market for foreign companies looking to private a digital service for citizens in these countries.

Let's look at a few of these.

Keeping your population safe and spied on is a good way to know what is happening and not worrying too much. VPNs in Singapore offer a way for bigger companies to not only keep people safe but also make sure they are protected when browsing.

VPNS in Turkey

After the 2016 uprising political tensions throughout the country erupted and caused multiple factions to decide that keeping a safe and secure Internet wasn't something that was the government's top priority. The result was a population that was highly restricted in Internet access and unable to use the data that they wanted. Popular websites like Youtube, Facebook and even social blogging platforms were outright banned. To find out more check out VPN Turkey.

How Will the Future of VPNS Change

In other words, this technology is essential to the prosperity of all of mankind and not just some small group of technology-elitists.

ban on chinese vpns

I'll just say this bluntly - if you're going to be using a VPN in China you might get in a little bit of trouble. How much trouble? Well, that's not known yet.

There is one fact to the matter and that's that China is seriously cracking down on VPN violations throughout the country and in an effort to keep everyone nice and safe (whatever that means) they have started banning websites or services that allow for netizens to surf the interwebs freely.

The Big Ban

As of 2017, the Chinese government has banned access to big western media outlets like Twitter, Facebook and even Youtube.  People are encouraged to use Chinese equivalents of these servers which are highly regulated and observed thoroughly. Youtube and FB offer a degree of anonymity that the Chinese government just can't handle.

While it's not sure how much they will regulate the market, rumors are that it will soon be illegal and no networks will be allowed to operate within China. Special cable connections are also being banned as well with only special companies being allowed to sell secure cables - companies which must be approved by local authorities.

The new rules for building and mtaining this huge crackdown on Internet privacy came out this Sunday, where the officials in charge said that they needed to clean up the Internet and make it a safe place for all people. The best way to do so would be to spy on everyone 24/7 apparently. Great fuckin plan...

The regulations are also extremely vague at what they call a VPN. It almost seems as if they don't even know how the networks operate and the legislation calls for a moritorium on any device that basically stops big brother from looking into your life.

He was quoted as saying...

"We must redouble efforts to develop global connectivity to enable all countries to achieve inter-connected growth and share prosperity. ... Pursuing protectionism is like locking oneself in a dark room. While wind and rain may be kept outside, that dark room will also block light and air," he said.

China is one of the few countries that bans VPN services and doesn't let people access a free worldwide Internet. While this is a serious issue for people both locally it's also an important point for those living abroad.

Countries like Vietnam and Thailand have also had similar issues with accessing information clearly and accurately. It seems as if the powers that would be wants to keep the world in the dark and stupid.

If you're going to pick a VPN provider it's also important to do your research. Some providers, while cheap, store your information in their own servers which serves to absolutely defeat the entire purpose of using a VPN provider. VPN Singapore is one such website that has a huge writeup on reviews for each VPN provider and what they hope to accomplish.

Drop a comment below on what you think the great China VPN could mean for Internet privacy as a whole.

When it comes to blogging in Australia there is one important thing to remember.

Australian Internet is terrible.

graph showing Internet speeds in Australia

I don't know why this is so but many suspect that it's due to the lack of infrastructure in Australia for web hosting and also point the finger of blame at low quality undersea wires. The channel between Australia and the rest of the world is quite large and the amount of data that needs to move through those wires is also huge.

This results in an overall slower speed of the Australian Internet which results in a worse experience for web visitors.

Australian Web Data and Speeds Simplified

So what can you do. In today's post our friend Lucas Johnson will share some of his top tips for finding a web host in Australia that is reliable and high quality. Off the bad Lucas suggests that in order to find the highest quality Australian host you'll need to look through detailed reviews of Bluehost, Siteground and a few others.

Right off the bat if we were to ask Lucas what is your most recommended host he would say site around. Site ground Australia provides some of the top service, quality and support for the money.

This is because site ground has been dedicated to its customers and to its services for the last 15 years. Lucas mentions that most web hosting companies don't actually care about their customer base rather they are looking to make quick profits. This is an issue for businesses looking for host to develop a long term relationship with. This is even more apparent  with the insane prices a lot of companies are charging for SSL and even VPN service.

Lucas mentions, "I'm not sure where they are pulling these prices from. Their margins on some of these hosting or VPN packages are like 95%. And despite this they still provide absolutely terrible quality service."

Small Businesses in Australia Shouldn't Have to Worry About Speed

As a business you don't want to deal with more troubles, worries or technical issues. These are all real problems when it comes to picking the cheaper quality hosts. Lucas recommends dedicated hosting for any business that is looking to really up there web presence in any major city. Dedicated hosting in Australia will give you a massive advantage over other businesses who use shared hosting solutions.

explaining the different hosts available in Sydney and Melbourne

Why Dedicated Hosting is the Best Choice

This is because dedicated hosting is just much more powerful than regular hosting. It works by giving your website a set unique IP address that is yours and yours alone. Compared to shared hosting, which shares one IP with hundreds of other businesses and you have a recipe for slow and on reliable Internet speed. Dedicated hosting is a must for any business that is looking to grow and provide an extremely stable and reliable experience for any of its web visitors.

So what is the best host to use, well it's pretty easy to see if you just compare the data. By comparing the day that you need to look at the historical evidence that different hosts provide.

People are social creatures and through evolution we have learned from each other by listening, our brain is hardwired for stories. Before we learn how to read, all information is transmitted to us and understood by listening, therefore the audio channel has a crucial importance in human development. Even later in life, when we are perfectly able to read on our own, if presented with the possibility to listen to something as opposed to reading it, most likely we won’t say no, because it just feels more natural and more relaxing, even if in a passive way.

Audible is a company founded by Donald (Don) Katz, a writer and publisher who bet exactly on these natural determinants of human learning. After a bumpy start, the company grew by standing in the shadow of giants like Apple and Amazon and has even started a new trend in acting careers.

In the book “We are all born entrepreneurs”, there is the touching story behind Audible’s beginnings in 1997:

While working closely with his daughter to help her deal with dyslexia, Don noticed the powerful synchronization between audio and visual learning. His daughter’s ability to listen to books as she was reading them was one of the key components that encouraged her to persevere. As a result, Don began to investigate a small segment of the publishing world that produced books on tape.

The only drawback was the fact that the technology available at the moment could not support the idea in a cost effective way, due to low internet transfer rates and high cost per bit and the company went bankrupt in 2001. They were too ahead of time. The first break-through came from an exclusive deal with Apple and continued with the introduction of the iPod, which brought audio content in the pocket of the masses.

The second boost came from Apple iTunes’ rival, Amazon MP3 digital music store, in 2008 when the retail giant bought Audible for $300 million. As an article from Reuters states:

"Audible was already the exclusive partner for Amazon's digital audio offering on Amazon.com. Audible will benefit from an immediate branding event and become integral to the very bright future of Amazon Kindle"

With the marketing power and client base of Amazon the sky was the limit for Audible and they started opening up to more ideas and genres.  In the good tradition of Amazon being a marketplace, they extended Audible by creating ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange), a platform for book right owners, narrating actors and other parties that could create new audio books. This is an approach similar to YouTube’s user generated content, but in a more professional manner, suitable for being monetized immediately.

The last piece of the puzzle in the growing industry of the audio books is the human element. As the demand for this kind of content rises, so does the number of people ready to provide their services to the industry. Actors, both well known and obscure, are lending their voices to characters of audiobooks for good money. The impact can even be seen even in drama universities. Leading schools like Julliard and Yale have already introduced classes and workshops to prepare future graduates for this kind of unique work:

“Courtney Blackwell Burton, director of career services at Juilliard, said: <<It is very exciting because it is a new source of income and work that really uses their training. We are really pushing this idea of entrepreneurship, and with narration you can even have your own studio in your home. Since the workshops started in 2008, eight Juilliard actors have recorded 62 books for Audible>>, she said.”

As we have less time and we need to multi-task, we can expect an increase of the demand for audiobooks, since they offer a pleasant distraction, even during work, a trend that started in the 1930’s when factories started employing professional readers to keep workers entertained and productive. The difference is that now we have each a saying in the choice of what we hear.
