A bit of trivia: arch uses the ftp-utils heavily. It forms a layer of abstraction through which both local and remote archives can be accessed.
Another bit of trivia: The ftp-utils uses the high-level networking interface provided by the hackerlab C library. Alas, there is not (yet) a VU virtual file-system layered over FTP.
